Design & Technology
Through high-quality provision, our children will grow to understand how design and technology impacts the world around them. They will develop passion for the subject and will recognise fields within design and technology as potential career pathways. Through the creation of purposeful products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, children will be inspired to think innovatively and develop planning, designing, assessing and evaluation skills. A blend of design work, adult-led focused tasks, child-led practical work and scaffolded evaluation tasks nurtures independence, self-reflection, confidence, resilience, creativity and risk-taking.
During Key Stage 1, pupils begin to develop their creativity and practical skills by designing and making simple products with a clear purpose. They explore a range of materials and components, learning how to use tools safely and effectively. Pupils are encouraged to think about the needs of themselves and others, and to evaluate their ideas and products. They begin to understand basic principles of nutrition and prepare simple dishes, laying the foundation for healthy living.
During Key Stage 2, pupils deepen their understanding of the design process by working on more complex projects that involve research, planning, and evaluation. They learn to apply knowledge from subjects such as science, mathematics and computing to solve real-life problems. Pupils develop greater independence in selecting tools and materials, and refine their techniques to improve functionality and appearance. They also explore mechanical systems, electrical components and computer programming within their designs, becoming more confident and innovative in their approach.
